Chapter 2: Scoring Override

Lesson 1: Scoring Basics

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the main scoring opportunities in Override.
  • Identify the point values used in Head-to-Head Matches.
  • Determine whether a Pin is Placed.
  • Determine which halves of a Pin are scored.
  • Determine whether a Toggle is set to a color.
  • Identify when final match scoring is evaluated.

Scoring is one of the most important responsibilities for Head Referees and Scorekeeper Referees to understand; in Override, alliances earn points by completing several different scoring actions throughout the match. Some points come from scoring objects placed on goals, while other points come from controlling Toggles, earning the Autonomous Bonus, or ending the match with robots in the Midfield.

This lesson will introduce the basic structure of scoring in Override. You will review the main scoring opportunities, the point values used in Head-to-Head Matches, and the general ways that Pins, Toggles, Yellow Pins, and robots in the Midfield contribute to the final score.

Read the Game Manual

As you read the Game Manual, you may see red boxes of information. These red boxes are used to add additional context or clarification to a rule. In the example below from <SC2>, the red box explains how the criteria of “nested” relates to other scoring rules.

Read the Scoring section of the current VEX V5 Robotics Competition Override Game Manual. Use the Glossary in Appendix B to help you understand game-specific terminology while reading.

Note that Autonomous scoring and the Autonomous Win Point scoring referenced in rules <SC7> and <SC8> will be covered in a later lesson.

Main Scoring Opportunities in Override

In Override, most scoring is evaluated at the end of the match. As a referee, you do not need to memorize every scoring detail from this lesson alone. Instead, use this section to build a basic understanding of the main scoring opportunities you will evaluate after the match ends. There are four main ways to score points in a Head-to-Head Match:

Close view of a Override goal. A red pin is on the top with a blue pin showing closest to the goal.

Placing Alliance-Colored Pins

This example shows both a Blue Pin and a Red Pin placed in a Goal. Both the red and Blue Alliance would earn points for their Pins.

One quadrant in an Override field. A goal has three yellow pins placed and the toggle is red.

Owning Yellow Pins with a Toggle

This example shows a Toggle set to red. The Red Alliance would own the Yellow Pins placed in the matching Quadrant.

Override field at the end of the match. Two robots with blue license plates and one robot with a red license plate can be seen crossing the Midfield line.

Ending the Match in the Midfield

This example shows three robots in the Midfield at the end of a Match. All three robots would earn points for ending in the Midfield.

In addition, the Blue Alliance has the most robots in the Midfield. Because of this they would also earn ownership of any Yellow Pins in the Midfield Goal.

Alliances can also earn points by winning the Autonomous Bonus. A later lesson will cover scoring in the Autonomous Period.

A note before you begin the Check Your Understanding Questions: Keep the Scoring section of the Game Manual available as you read and answer questions. You can, and should, feel empowered to reference the manual when you are at the field as well if you have questions. Use this as a way to familiarize yourself with finding the correct answer in the manual.
