Chapter 4: Planning Your Event
Introduction
An event day is the result of decisions you make months earlier. Before there is a check-in table or a match schedule, you choose a date, find a venue, set a budget, recruit volunteers, and post a listing that teams can register for.
These choices all depend on each other. Your venue sets how many fields fit in the room, and the number of fields sets how long the day takes. The length of the day limits how many teams you can invite, and your team count drives how many volunteers you need and what registration has to cover. Change one and you will usually have to go back and adjust the others.
This chapter plans one event from the first decision to the posted listing — a local qualifying event much like the one in Chapter 1. Each lesson also looks at what would change if the event were different: a later date, more teams, no judging. Each of those is a good event too. The goal is for you to see what a choice costs and what it makes possible, so you can work through the same decisions for your own event.

The time to complete this chapter is approximately 1 hour.
In This Chapter
This chapter walks through the choices that were made while planning a competition event and how each choice impacts the others. You will learn about planning the details of an event, determining the volunteers needed and how to best utilize those volunteers, as well as how to post your event so teams can register.
