Chapter 7: League Events

Introduction

A league is a qualifying event that takes place over several weeks instead of one day. Teams play the same Qualification Matches they would at a one-day tournament, split across a series of short meetups called Ranking Sessions. The league keeps one ranking for the whole season, and it updates after every Ranking Session as new match results come in.

The league ends with a final session for finals play and, if the league offers them, judged awards. VEX IQ calls this last session the Finals Session, and VEX V5 calls it the Championship Session. (This chapter uses Championship/Finals Session when a point applies to both programs.)

Why Run a League

A league can offer more flexibility than a one-day tournament:

  • Shorter sessions — A Ranking Session fits into a couple of hours after school. Sixteen teams can each play three or four matches on one field in about two hours.
  • Partial attendance — Teams do not have to attend every session. Smaller sessions need less space, fewer fields, and fewer volunteers, and judges are only needed at the last session.
  • Flexible eligibility — A league can be open or invitational, and the limit on teams from a single organization does not apply. You can run a league for the schools in one district or for the teams in one organization.

Teams benefit too. The time between sessions gives them a chance to improve their robots and code before they compete again.

Teams of students sit and stand in and around a V5 competition field on the floor of a gym, preparing for matches at a league sesion.

A league follows the same Event Qualifying Criteria, uses the same Tournament Manager software, and relies on the same certified volunteers as any qualifying event. The main difference is the calendar. You set and post every session date before the league is approved, and one Tournament Manager file carries the league from the first session to the last.

The time to complete this chapter is approximately 30 minutes.

In This Chapter

This chapter follows a league from posting to its last session, then shows how one Tournament Manager file runs every session along the way.

Note: This chapter completes the Event Partner Certification. After completing the Chapter Exams for Chapters 1 through 7, you will take the Event Partner Certification Exam to earn your certificate.
