Chapter 2: Scoring Teamwork Matches

Introduction

The previous chapter introduced the role of the referees and the structure of a VEX IQ Robotics Competition event. Now that you have reviewed those foundations, this chapter begins applying them to the 2026–2027 game: VEX IQ Robotics Competition Level Up.

Before learning the details of scoring, take time to watch the official Level Up game introduction video shown below. The video provides a helpful overview of the elements of the game. As you watch, focus on the major ways teams earn points and the game elements referees will need to evaluate after a match.

Level Up

VEX IQ Robotics Competition Level Up is played on a 6-foot by 8-foot field. Two robots form an alliance and work together to score as many points as possible in a 60-second Teamwork Match. The object of the game is to score Bean Bags into goals, with higher goals worth more points. Because a robot can carry only one Bean Bag at a time, and most Bean Bags must travel across the field to reach a goal, teams balance how many points they score, how quickly they score, and how often they can repeat the action.

For both Scorekeeper Referees and Head Referees, understanding scoring is essential. Scoring decisions determine the Teamwork Challenge score, which sets rankings and carries into Finals Matches. Referees do not need to memorize every scoring combination, but they do need to understand how scoring statuses are determined, when scores are evaluated, and how to support other referees in making accurate scoring decisions.

The time to complete this chapter is approximately 30 minutes.

In this Chapter

In this chapter, you will learn how points are earned in Level Up, how to evaluate example scoring statuses, how to approach close scoring decisions consistently in Teamwork Matches, and how to record scores using the VEX TM Mobile app.
