Chapter 3: Running and Scoring Robot Skills Matches

Introduction

Robot Skills Matches are a separate part of a VEX IQ Robotics Competition event. Unlike a Teamwork Match, where two teams cooperate as one alliance, a Robot Skills Match is played by a single team, whose robot has one minute to score as many points as possible.

Robot Skills scores are separate from Teamwork Match scores and do not directly affect the results of Qualification or Finals Matches. Instead, teams that choose to participate are ranked on their combined Driving Skills and Autonomous Coding Skills scores. Robot Skills Matches are optional — a team that does not compete in them is not penalized in Teamwork Matches — but participating may open eligibility for some judged awards.

Referees support Robot Skills fields during an event, so both Scorekeeper Referees and Head Referees need to understand how these matches are run, how they are scored, and which rules apply. The procedures at a Robot Skills field may look different from a Teamwork Match field, but the goal is the same: help teams complete their matches safely, fairly, and consistently.

A student reaches across a field to put a piece back in place. Her robot is behind her on the field and a screen can be seen to the side of the field reading Autonomous Coding Skills.

The time to complete this chapter is approximately 30 minutes.

In this Chapter

In this chapter, you will learn how Robot Skills Matches are structured and how they differ from Teamwork Matches. You will also learn how Robot Skills scores are recorded in the VEX TM Mobile app, when a score should be recorded as zero, and how referees support teams that choose to end a Robot Skills Match early.

Note: This chapter completes the shared foundation for all referees before the Scorekeeper Referee Certification Exam. After completing the Chapter Exams for Chapters 1 through 3, you will take your first Certification Exam to earn your Scorekeeper Referee Certificate. Upon completion, the following chapters will become available to continue on for Head Referee Certification.
