Chapter 8: Staying Prepared Throughout the Season
Introduction
The rules you officiate from can change over the course of the season. The Game Manual is a living document that the Game Design Committee updates on a published schedule as they learn how the game is actually being played. The official Q&A adds binding clarifications on top of it throughout the year. A call that is correct in week one may be governed by a clarified rule a month later, and a strong Head Referee keeps pace with those changes rather than relying on a single early read of the Game Manual.
That does not mean memorizing every update or anticipating every ruling. It means building a few habits: confirming you are working from the latest version of the manual, knowing where official answers live, and recognizing when a question is worth researching further or escalating. These habits are what keep your calls accurate and consistent from the first event of the season to the last.

The time to complete this chapter is approximately 20 minutes.
In This Chapter
This chapter covers the two official sources a Head Referee relies on — the Game Manual and the official Q&A — and how they work together, along with how to use the Q&A system, when to research or escalate a question, and how Game Manual updates take effect over the season. As in earlier chapters, the Game Manual remains your official source for exact criteria. This chapter points you to the resources that keep you current, but it is not a substitute for actually using them.
