Chapter 2: Reviewing Engineering Notebooks
Introduction
The previous chapter established who judges are and what judging is for: recognizing students who do their own work and can explain it. This chapter puts that into practice with the first thing most judges evaluate at an event — the Engineering Notebook.
An Engineering Notebook is a team's record of its season. It shows how students defined problems, considered ideas, built and tested solutions, and improved on what they learned. It is a working document, not a presentation created for judges, and it is written and organized by students. Teams submit their notebook along with up to three short summaries that help you navigate it.
The time to complete this chapter is approximately 45 minutes.

This chapter covers what teams submit for judging and how to score it. You will learn what an Engineering Notebook documents and how to use the Season, Code, and Credit Summaries to find your way through one. You will then learn how the Engineering Notebook Rubric is organized, how to choose a score for a criterion based on the evidence in front of you, and how to hold a consistent standard across teams of different sizes, ages, and experience levels.
