Best Practices for Getting Started with Your 123 Bundle
Watch this video to learn about best practices for setting up your VEX 123 Bundle to make teaching with VEX 123 in your classroom run smoothly. Learn a simple process for updating, naming, and pairing your 123 Robots and Coders to help you and your students be successful with VEX 123.
Hi. My name is Jason McKenna. Welcome back to the VEX Classroom, where today we're going to talk about Best Practices with your 123 Bundle. Now, we've created a lot of resources for you when you're just getting started with VEX 123, we have a video that talks about what's in the bundle. We have videos in resources in our VEX Library that talk about how to update firmware. This one is more going to be about the actual best practices, things that will put you at a good place as you go to start to teach your class. Now we're going to repeat some things that are in some different videos, but this is again, a good place to start if you're just looking for best practices to get started with your 123 bundle, those other resources will link below this video. So again, this is a really nice video to get started with your VEX 123 bundle now when you get your bundle, the first thing that you're going to do is you're going to charge your robot and add batteries to your Coders. Now, if I go to my top view, you'll see here when you get your 123 Robots, they come in this really nice container here. And all that you have to do is use the USB cable right here to go ahead and plug it into an outlet, plug into your computer and go ahead and get those charged right away.
And all of them will be charged at the same time. That makes it really convenient for you to go ahead and get started doing that. So now again, the first thing you should want to do is charge your robots and add a battery to your Coder. After you do that, you're going to want to use the Classroom App to go ahead and update the firmware on both your Coder and your robot. So I have a charged robot right here. I'm going to go ahead and turn the robot on, OK? And now I'm going to go to my computer view. And you can see here I have the Classroom App and it's connected to my robot right here. Now with this I have both my robot and my coder. Now, the firmware in my coder, as you can see, was already updated, but I'm going to go ahead and update the firmware in my robot. In your example, you would update them both. But just for the sake of time, I'm going to update the firmware just in my robot. You can see what it needs. Update. It's a pink color right there. So I'm going to select that and it's going to go through the update process right now. OK, if you're if you're not sure about the Classroom App where I can download the Classroom App and more information about how to use a Classroom App, again, we will link those resources below this video so that will all be ready for you.
Now, I'm going to go back to my top view again, and you can see here that the robot is blinking like a red color and a green color. That means that the firmware on this robot is actually being updated. Now, it's really important while you're doing this to make sure that you do not turn either your your device off. I'm going to turn my iPad off as this is going on. You can see there's little attention sign right there telling you that makes sure that your device or your robot itself does not turn off. Since this is a newly charged robot, I don't have to worry about the battery in this robot going all the way down after I actually as it's being updated right here, so I'm just about done. So there we go. I hear the sound that tells me it's done. So now it's green. That means that my firmware that means my firmware is updated right there. Now, the next thing I'm going to do is you see this option right here is to rename. OK, I'm going to go and I'm going to select that now. And this now gives me the option to go ahead and to rename my robot. Now, in addition to being able to rename the 123 robot, as you see here, when I select, I can also rename the coder. Now, why is this important? The reason why this is important is because you're going to want to pair your robot and your coder.
And when you go through that pairing process, you're going to be able to keep them together because they're both going to have the same names. That is just a classroom management things that makes it much easier for you to be able to run your classroom. What you don't want to do is you don't want to have the students all at the same time pairing their coders to their robot you can pair these two together and essentially keep them together and store them together the entire year. And if they get separated, the naming that you'll do in the Classroom App will allow it. And then when you actually label the robot in the coder, that will allow you to also keep them together. Once you pair them like that, they will never become unpaired if they stay paired like that for the entire year. You never have to go through that pairing process with your students. And again, a classroom of young students all trying to pair their robots with their coder, that just wouldn't be a good experience. OK, I went through and I named everything via the Classroom App. Again, if you have a question about that, we have an article link below that will show you how to do that. And what I've done here is I went through and I've labeled on the back of the robot and on the back of the coder how to pair it.
So I'll go to my over -- their names. I'll go to my overhead view now and you can see right here, I've labeled this green one, I labeled this green one. Now I can keep the robot and the coder together. I can keep those things stored throughout the entire year. They are now paired and I don't have to worry again about my students pairing everything together. So to review the steps, the first thing you're going to do is charge, charge your robots and add a battery to your coder. After you do that, you're going to update the firmware and both your coder and the robot using the Classroom App. After that, you're going to rename the robot and the coder will use the naming convention. The convention of a color and then a number. You can do whatever you want. The robot was green so we named it Green 1. If there was another green robot, you can name it Green 2. You could come up with your own naming convention, but that's what we used. Then you're going to label the robot and the coder. We labeled the robot right here. We labelled the coder right here, and now they're paired together and they could stay paired the entire school year. This avoids you having the students pair their coder to the robots all at the same time and having to do that at the beginning of every class period.
This won't take you long to do with all the robots in the bundle. Won't take you very long at all, but it's going to avoid potential problems in the future, and it's going to avoid you wasting precious class time in the future. So this will help you get started. And to avoid any potential classroom management problems in the future just by following these few simple steps. If you have any questions about anything I talked about in this video, I would encourage you to go in and ask that in the community and I'll be happy to go on or someone from our team will be happy to go on and answer your questions. So thank you very much and thank you for joining me for best practices with your 123 bundle.
