Ideas for Incorporating VEXcode VR into Art Classes
In this video you will learn about various activities and methods for making cross-curricular connections between VEXcode VR and Art in your classroom. Alaina will talk about several VEXcode VR Activities that can be used to supplement your existing curriculum like Color by Number and Mondrian Patterns.
(upbeat music) Welcome back to the VEX Classroom. My name is Alaina. And in this video we're going to be talking about a few ideas for Incorporating VEXcode VR into an Art Classroom. So we're going to go through a couple different activities in ways that you could implement. This is some sort of extension to what you're learning or another way to create create those cross-curricular connections. However, we can't cover all of the ideas in one video either, so I would love it if you would share this video in the PD+ Community and also share your ideas for how you can make those cross curricular connections between Art and VEXcode VR. I can't wait to see what you come up with now. The first thing that I do when I am looking for some sort of cross curricular connection is I take a look at our VEXcode VR activities. So let's go ahead and start there. Now on our activities page for VEXcode VR, we have our filters to the side and because I know that we are going to focus on art in this video, I'm going to filter out everything except for the Art Canvas+. I want to look at just what's on the Art Canvas Plus you also, if you wanted to look for additional ideas, could look at the traditional Art Canvas.
But for this one, I really love the additional functionality of Art Canvas Plus and I think it makes for some great examples. So there's three in particular I want to talk about today. The first is Color by Number, then the Mondrian Patterns, and then we can talk about Flower Garden. So the first one I have up is the Color by Number activity. So in the Color by Number activity, there's actually three levels. So there are three different images that students would need to color. This is a great way to work on the spatial reasoning of exactly where is this located? How do you sequence things inside of a blocks project? But it also, once you move into the upper levels, you can talk about color mixing. So these three colors for the ladybug can be made just by using the basic sliders in VEXcode VR. So if I open VEXcode VR, inside of VEXcode VR for Art Canvas Plus, you have this option for set pen color or the fill color where you have these sliders. So in level one of Color by Number you have let's see, we have red, black and green. So black is all the sliders to one direction green is this slider all the way up and then the red is the red slider all the way up. So in that particular level, students don't need to think about mixing colors or how they work together, but as they level up, they need to start thinking about how they can mix colors together to create the orange, the yellow, the purple, getting into different shades of colors as well inside of level three and also the number of colors.
So this kind of scaffolds up with the students as you want to do more of that coding and more of that color mixing in the art there. The second activity I want to talk about is Mondrian. So these Mondrian patterns may seem familiar to you. These are based off of a famous artist, and it's combined with using these parallel and perpendicular lines of varying widths along with primary colors to fill different spaces. So in this particular activity, it's a little bit more complex than Color by Number. But what you have is you actually have a historical application of different artists and what they've done as well as how you can apply that to create the number of intersecting lines that you have here. So I actually have an example solution here, pulled up for Level One. And you can see here how students would need to think about the width of the line, where it's going on here, how they're going to create those perpendicular lines. You can see a different width here. What colors are they going to use to fill those different areas? All of that's part of this art application where students still get a chance to create something that's all of their own, just with the inspiration of a given artist, you can find all of these sample solutions in the teacher portal for VEXcode VR and you can download them and run them yourself as well if you want to see the rest of this.
The last activity I want to talk about as an idea is the Flower Garden activity. This is a little bit more advanced from the coding aspect, but it really challenges students to take applications of math, of art, of computer science in order to create these flowers with variables, with the repeats as well. So you can see here it's the same pattern as you go through. This could be something else that's very similar to a pantagraph or something else that creates those various lines. But using a pantagraph with a virtual robot. So this is just another way that you can apply that for students. Those are the three VEXcode VR activities I wanted to talk to you about today to create those cross curricular connections between VEXcode VR and art classrooms.
